The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has approved an increase in the hydropower electricity tariff of Rs1.11 per unit.

For the period of 2022–2023, the new price of a hydropower unit has increased from the previous Rs3.85 to Rs4.96.

The Central Power Purchasing Authority (CPPA) was mandated by the regulatory body to assess the hydropower stations owned by WAPDA for capacity.

It stipulated that each station’s report should be submitted to Nepra along with a separate analysis of the capacity status.

People in various Pakistani cities are protesting against the inflated electricity after receiving enormous bills, which coincides with the increase in the hydropower tariff.

Along with setting people on fire, incensed citizens demanded that the government remove additional taxes from electricity bills. The caretaker regime is negotiating with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the midst of the demonstration to secure aid for the general populace.
