PTA Permits Telcos to Charge Up to Rs. 200 for SIM Rejects

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) said on Friday that cellular mobile carriers in Pakistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), may impose a “SIM Disowning Charge” of up to Rs. 200 on SIMs with a retention duration of less than six months, starting on January 1, 2024.

PTA said that customers have several options for verifying the status of registered SIMs. These consist of going to the SIM Information System website or texting 668 with a CNIC number (no dashes).

Additionally, it is recommended that all customers reject or return any superfluous SIM cards for free by December 31, 2023, at the latest. Customers may help promote responsible SIM usage and prevent SIM disowning fees by doing this.

In situations where an unauthorized SIM card is issued without the consumer’s knowledge or agreement, a one-time waiver against the SIM disowning price will be given.

PTA stated in its statement that it is dedicated to maintaining the safety and security of the country while providing all telecom users with uninterrupted, high-quality services.
