The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) of Pakistan has approved a significant increase in electricity costs for Karachi power consumers.

The unexpected turn of events has shocked Karachi Electric’s customers, who will now be forced to pay an extra Rs4.45 per unit for electricity.

Many Karachi residents are in shock over this rise, which was approved as part of the first-quarter adjustment for the previous financial year.

The effects of this choice will be noticed over the next few months, as Nepra announced that extra power user collections will be imposed in October and November of 2023.

The rise will result in an additional cost of 1 rupee and 48 paisa per unit for users who consume 300 units per month.

Electricity rates would rise to 3 rupees and 21 paise per unit for those who use more energy, specifically those who use 301 units or more.

Residents in Karachi, who are already dealing with a number of economic issues, such as rising inflation, are naturally anxious about how this increase in the price of energy would affect their household budgets. The rise comes at a time when many people are already having trouble making ends meet, and it is anticipated to raise pressure on city residents’ cost of living.
