In anticipation of the T20 World Cup in 2024, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is preparing to choose Babar Azam as the as the captain again.

At first, Babar Azam was also in the running to succeed Shaheen, but Muhammad Rizwan was seen as the frontrunner. Babar is once again the front-runner for the captaincy, though, thanks to recent events. The PCB is very close to making a decision about his appointment.

Following the 2023 World Cup, Babar Azam gave up his role as white-ball captain, while Shaheen Afridi assumed leadership of the Twenty20 format. Babar resigned from red-ball leadership after losing the T20I captaincy, which allowed Shan Masood to be named Test captain. Pakistan’s performance was poor, as seen by their three Test series losses in Australia and their 1-4 T20I series loss in New Zealand.

The PCB’s leadership has since changed, with Mohsin Naqvi succeeding Zaka Ashraf as chairman. During his most recent Lahore news conference, Naqvi made a suggestion about a possible change in captaincy.
