Because of a popular TikTok video she made showing her eating crispy hog skin, an Indonesian female influencer was given a prison term.

The woman in question, Lina Lutfiawati, is a Muslim who even uttered the prayer “Bismillah” before eating the dish that she was aware is regarded as haram in Islam, despite the fact that non-Muslims are permitted to consume pork in Indonesia. Millions of people watched the video very rapidly, and it simultaneously sparked fascination and fury.

The court has sentenced the 33-year-old woman, also known as Lina Mukherjee, to two years in prison for blasphemy in response to public outcry.

On Tuesday, a court in Palembang, Indonesia, which lies on the island of Sumatra’s southern coast, found Lutfiawati guilty of willfully “spreading information that was intended to incite hate or individual or group enmity based on religion.” She was given a two-year prison sentence as well as a 250 million rupiah ($16,249.59) fine.

The court’s ruling was based on the argument that Lutfiawati, in spite of her behaviour, identified as a Muslim and that her video was considered to be blasphemous under Indonesian law. Muslims all over the world and the local media have praised the ruling.

Following the decision, Lutfiawati apologised in front of the people and expressed shock at the harshness of the sentence. She said in a local news programme, “I recognise that I am wrong, but I did not expect this punishment.
