In order to pinpoint potential locations for a sanitary landfill site, the government has declared its intention to reconsider the Master Plan of the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT). A consultant has been hired to assess the viability of these locations by March 2023.

The Federal Cabinet has been informed by Interior Division on Feb 1st, 2023 that this choice has been made on written instructions received from PM’s Office on Dec 2, 2022.

The Secretary to the Prime Minister was previously ordered by the Islamabad High Court to submit a report outlining the steps taken to establish a sustainable waste disposal and management system in the ICT, according to its orders beginning on August 12th, 2022.

Over 1,200 tonnes of solid waste are produced daily in the ICT, which has a population of over 2.2 million people. Only 650 tonnes of this waste is processed by the Capital Development Authority (CDA), with the remaining tonnes being managed by local union councils and private contractors.

By establishing a state of emergency for garbage transportation, employing an advisor to create an integrated solid waste management plan, directing an extensive study of waste generation, and assigning land for garbage disposal sites, the CDA is attempting to enhance waste management.

The CDA’s request for the establishment of sanitary dumping sites has been approved by the Federal Cabinet, subject to a consultant’s feasibility study being completed by March 2023 and the completion of the required legal and environmental processes during construction. Additionally, the Cabinet Division has been instructed to make this choice public before the formal minutes are confirmed.
