Instagram Introduces Changes to Stop Multiple Messages from Random Users

DMs (Direct Messages) on Instagram now have a new safety feature that should prevent annoying strangers from sending you unauthorised notifications all the time.

Someone who doesn’t follow you will only be able to send you one text message at a time. Only after you accept their chat or follow request, can you engage them in a more in-depth conversation.

This ought to lessen spam, particularly for larger accounts that are more vulnerable to receiving messages from strangers.

Additionally, a new DM request will only be accepted as text messages. Images, videos, and voice messages cannot be sent until a chat request has been approved or you have been added as a follower.

Head of Women’s Safety at Meta, Cindy Southworth, stated:

“When people open their inboxes, we want them to feel assured and in command. We’re currently testing new features that prevent users from receiving multiple messages, images, or videos from users they don’t follow until they’ve agreed to a chat request.”

This function will be added to Instagram’s already-existing DM restrictions, like “Hidden Words,” which automatically filters messages from strangers for possibly objectionable words and phrases. It is simpler to ignore these messages because they are delivered to a different folder.

A clever method of avoiding someone without blocking them is also available on Instagram. You can use the “Restrict” option to ensure that the annoying comments made by people you follow are only visible to them.
