As monsoon clouds loom over the city, the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has issued a high alert and completed all necessary preparations to safeguard port operations and cargo during the expected spell of heavy rains.

According to KPT sources, proactive safety and operational measures have been put in place in anticipation of the monsoon’s arrival. Ships will be securely berthed and closely monitored throughout their stay in the port. The deployment of mooring lines and standby tugboats ensures that any emergency assistance can be provided promptly.

A KPT alert also highlighted that a standby pilot will be available around the clock to help navigate vessels into the deep sea in the event of severe weather, minimizing risk to maritime traffic.

“We’ve taken all precautionary steps to ensure cargo safety,” a KPT spokesperson said. Special attention is being given to container yards and terminals, where empty containers will be stacked only two-high to reduce the risk of toppling during high winds and heavy rainfall.

Additionally, instructions have been issued for maintenance checks and standby generators to guarantee an uninterrupted power supply, ensuring that port operations continue smoothly without disruption.

The Met Office has forecast moderate to heavy monsoon rains in Karachi over the next few days, prompting civic and port authorities to brace for possible urban flooding and related challenges.
