Stem cell treatment; a hopeful news for diabetic patients

0

There could be a good news coming for diabetic patients as scientists are currently working on a possible treatment technique.

Through this technique, insulin producing cells can be grown and will be protected from immune attack.

This can be a ray of hope for diabetic patients.

Basically In type-1 diabetes, the body is unable to produce insulin that is enough to control the blood sugar levels.

Due to this patients have to rely on insulin injections which many find difficult.

In order to overcome some of these challenges, a team worked on a technique that would have less hurdles by induceding pluripotent stem cells (iPS) to produce what the team called HILOs, or human islet-like organoids.

Michael Downes, senior staff scientist at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies said “This is the first ever study to show that HILOs can be protected from the immune system without genetic manipulation”. He further added “If we will be able to develop this as a therapy, patients will not need to take immune suppressing drugs”
