Peshawar High Court has nominated the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governor to administer the oath to lawmakers elected on reserved seats, following petitions filed by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and other opposition parties.
The oath-taking ceremony is scheduled for 9 AM tomorrow.
The development comes after the opposition raised concerns over the continuous delay in administering the oath to members elected on reserved seats in the KP Assembly. Earlier today, the provincial assembly session was adjourned due to an incomplete quorum, with no oath administered to the newly elected members.
Opposition parties submitted a petition to the Peshawar High Court’s registrar, requesting intervention in the matter. The petition argued that despite being notified by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the reserved seat members had not been sworn in, potentially affecting the upcoming Senate elections.
PML-N’s lawyer, Rehman Ullah Shah Advocate, also wrote a letter to the chief justice, urging that a representative be nominated under Article 255(2) to conduct the oath-taking. The ECP had previously sent a formal letter to the chief justice with the same request.
Separately, the ECP also wrote to the Peshawar High Court, emphasizing that administering the oath and conducting the Senate elections are constitutional obligations.
The commission urged the chief justice to ensure the process is completed so that the Senate polls can proceed as scheduled.
